Those Romantic Germans
Traitor to the Blood

I was just playing around today, and I noticed that SISTER OF THE DEAD has been published in Germany and TRAITOR TO THE BLOOD will be out in November.

Although our German publisher has taken a very different path on the covers than anyone else, I really like the moody, gothic--almost romantic--approach they've chosen.

I can't seem to save down the images, but here is an Amazon link for SISTER OF THE DEAD. I think this one works well for the story:

However . . . I think their choice for TRAITOR TO THE BLOOD may leave some readers puzzled and possibly grumpy:

This is a medieval political intrigue novel that focuses around Leesil. There is little-to-no romance in this book. There are brutal warlords, starving peasants, six-foot-tall Elven assassins, savage shape-shifting cats, and a lot of angst and fight sequences. This cover is going suggest the reader is buying a copy of Karen Chance's TOUCH THE DARK.

Maybe there are different expectations in cover art? Sure, we look at it and think "romantic gothy chick!" but I've seen entire TV specials on foreign commercials that make no sense compared to ours.

Oh, gosh, this is so true. I love the image . . . I just hope no one finds it misleading (smiles).

One of my favorite foreign TV commercials is from one of the Scandinavian countries and depicts a handsome, middle-aged rather Nordic-looking man in a grocery store. His son appears to be around eight years old, and the child wants something in the store the father will not buy (this whole intro takes about a second and a half), and then the boy starts screaming. He moves from screaming to throwing himself on the floor, flailing, screaming and turning red. People are standing around staring in horror and the father is staring as well. The entire commercial is just the kid throwing an unbelievable tantrum.

Then at the end, the caption is "Use Condoms."

I know this is in bad taste, but I laughed for five minutes.

There is nothing bad taste about it at all.

To quote South Park: What the hell is wrong with German people?

Actually, those are pretty cool covers, if you ask me. Just assume the publisher knows what they're doing and hope for the best.

I love South Park! No one is safe. Hah!

They are cool covers . . . I'm just not sure they depict anything about our books (smiles).
